Goa government mulling lockdown, to decide soon

Owing to the surging COVID situation in the country, Goa government is planning to impose total lockdown in the state. The state is at present under stringent Covid-19-related curbs, which include the closure of non-essential shops.Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has hinted that a lockdown may be imposed in the state to contain the transmission of the coronavirus as infections climb record high.The CM took stock of the situation in the state in a meeting with MLAs via video conferencing.

Talking to reporters later, The CM said his government was thinking “positively” to impose a lockdown and a decision would be taken after consulting stakeholders and the state cabinet in “two to three days”.Even if the state government went ahead with a lockdown, grocery stores and shops selling essential goods would continue to remain open.

Sawant’s remarks came soon after the Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the Goa government to impose restrictions on visitors arriving in the coastal state from May 10.

The court also sought detailed information about the government’s Covid management mechanism, while hearing a bunch of public interest litigations, which among other prayers, have sought a 15-day lockdown in Goa, which on Thursday witnessed its highest daily tally so far with 3,869 new positive cases and 58 deaths.

As many as 2,023 patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the number of recoveries to 77,014, leaving the state with 29,752 active cases.
