In yet another round of blocking Chinese apps, Government of India Tuesday blocked 43 Chinese mobile apps from accessing by users in India, under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement that this action was taken based on inputs that these apps were engaging in activities which are ‘prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order’.
The list includes Jack Ma-owned popular e-commerce giant Alibaba’s online shopping site Aliexpress, which has over 100 million downloads on Google Play Store. This is another setback for the e-commerce giant after its Ant Group’s $37-billion (£28 billion) initial public offering, (IPO) was halted in China.
Other apps of the company include AliSuppliers mobile app, Alibaba Workbench, and its digital payments app Alipay.
Earlier on 28 June, 2020 the Centre had blocked access to 59 Chinese mobile apps over similar reasons followed by 47 apps on July 28 and on 2nd September, 2020, 118 more apps taking the total list of banned apps to 267.
The latest move from Indian government comes amid ongoing border tensions between India and China.
