Hanau mass shooting: At least eight killed after two attacks in Germany

At least eight people killed and five injured in two shootings in Hanau, a town in western Germany on Wednesday evening. Two hookah lounges were reportedly been targeted.

Police authorities said they have started a large-scale hunt for the perpetrators early Thursday, three hours after the shootings which took place at about 10 p.m. (2100 GMT).

The motive behind the attack is immediately not clear, a short police statement said.Police said a dark-coloured vehicle was seen leaving the scene of the first shooting, and another shooting was reported at a second site.

Regional public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk said witnesses reported hearing eight or nine shots and seeing at least one person lying on the ground.

The perpetrator or perpetrators then apparently went to Hanau’s Kesselstadt neighbourhood, where shots were fired in another hookah lounge, the broadcaster said.

Police and helicopters are patrolling in both these areas.
