Category 5 Hurricane Dorian slams into the Bahamas

Powerfu Hurricane Dorian strengthened to a Category 5 storm, as it slammed into the Bahamas on Sunday.It is said to be the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever to come ashore in the Bahamas, equaling the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, before the storms were named.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Dorian is the strongest hurricane in modern records for the northwest Bahamas. Only four storms in the Atlantic have ever had higher sustained wind speeds and none since Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

Bahamas is a favourite destination for tourists and a well known winter escape for many tourists seeking sun and sea with Holiday plans to the Bahamas Islands.

According to a press release by the Ministry of tourism of Bahamas, it has activated their hurricane response programs and are taking all necessary steps to protect visitors and residents. Most of the hotels are empty and tourists were evacuated. 

President Trump also  tweeed about the churning monster saying “is looking like one of the largest hurricanes ever” as it moved within 205 miles of Florida.

According to hurricane center director Ken Graham,  Dorian is a “very treacherous, very dangerous, life-threatening situation” for the islands.

As the hurricane hit the island, residents posted videos asking for prayers online.

Flooding is a major concern for Bahamanian residents, as many homes are close to the water.As expected above 20 million Americans could feel the storm’s impact.
