Lambasingi – Kashmir of South India Facing The Good, Bad & Ugly Sides Of Tourism

Lambasingi, or Lammasingi as it is locally termed, was a little-known modorately populated village high up in the hill range of the Chintapalli Mandal in Visakhapatnam, came into focus when it received a snowfall in the year 2012 and the calm village grabbed attention of the people of Andhra pradesh as well as neighboring states, as a demanding tourist destination. This place is often referred as Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh as the temperature of this places goes as low as -2 °C in between December and January. But the increased tourists footfalls in Lambasingi is proven to be advantageous as well as disadvantageous for the region at the same time. Though it generates some revenue for being recognised as a tourist place, on the contrary, the careless tourist activities have an  adverse effect on the environment of the hillside, which used to be a pristine one erstwhile.

The Advantages:

Firstly considering the brighter side of the fact, being acknowledged as a serene hill station, Lambasingi is now experiencing a flocky tourist inflow which has been a common yearning of each and every tourist place. Additionally, the drop in temperature allows many non-local fruits and vegetables to grow here in this place. Like, for instance, its new strawberry farms attract a numerous guests resulting  cars, bikes and buses to be lined up here every weekend.
The sweet juicy strawberries are diligently packed in cute plastic boxes to be carried back by enthusiastic shoppers.

In oder to address the needs of tourists, locals here have set about some small businesses like tea stalls, breakfast centres and even local houses offered up for a night stay. Apart from that movable stalls selling locally grown produce, food trucks and road-side tea kiosks have also boomed the local economy to a great extend. The daily life has witnessed a definite improvement, revenue has increased and enterprising villagers have prospered.

The Disadvantages:

Despite being identified as a tourist hotspot, Lambasingi has no proper resort or hotel as such, which enables the tourists to carry their things of need like water bottles, packed foods and alcoholic beverage bottles with them. But when they left, with the thrown wrappers, bottles and disposables the picturesque beauty of the place appears to be ruinous completely.

Besides that, beer drinking bikers and impatiently honking drivers spoil the tranquil environment. Plastic, waste and noise are the main factors to be blamed for its pollution.

Every street, water body and empty plot in Lambasingi are scattered with carelessly thrown non-eco-friendly packing materials. Not only the visitors but the weekly village markets also generate a lot of plastic waste.

The lack of public toilets is another ugly reality of this beautiful place. Though villagers are helpful in this regard, constructing this basic infrastructure is a must required to help the nature lover tourists of Lambasingi.

What is to be done:

All the above concerns, pointing straight towards the enforcement of a proper systematic guidelines for the tourists as well as the locals. Otherwise, Lambasingi, the pristine beauty of Mother Nature will be a fast deteriorating commercial and littered tourist spot only.
