Coronavirus impact: IPL 2020 to be organized later due to coronavirus says Maharashtra Health Minister

Now the increasing threat of coronavirus  could impact the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) also. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday that IPL can be held on a later date in view of the growing threat of novel coronavirus across the country. As per schedule,defending champions Mumbai Indians to take on Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on 29th of March in the opening match.

Tope told to mediapersons that there is always a possibility of danger of contagious diseases to spread rapidly when large numbers of people gather at one place.This is not the right time to organise such events.It can be held later.

At present the discussions are on in its official circles whether to postpone the IPL and a decision would be taken and announcement would come shortly, he added.

The minister’s remarks came at a time when IPL 2020 is less than a month away.

Just a day before the minister’s statement, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had said on Friday that the IPL will be held as per schedule and BCCI will take all possible steps to deal with the coronavirus and smooth conduct of the tournament.

According to report obtained from the Ministry of Health, as of now,34 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in India.

Due to the increasing threat, many sporting events have been canceled worldwide. The Olympic event has also been questioned about this, which is to be held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, in July-August this year.
