The U.S. government issued a Level 2 travel advisory for two popular spring destinations this year. One is Bahamas and the other is Turks and Caicos Islands in United Kingdom. Level 2 advisory specifies travelers should “exercise increased caution” when traveling.
As the winter is concluding, being stressed with the season’s dramatic cold spells, extreme winds, and natural disasters, Americans usually chase for sunny beach destinations for a spring break and the Caribbean has always been a top choice for sun-seekers. But this time with US’s travel advisory, tourism at these two coveted destinations is likely to be lowered down.
Regarding the Bahamas, the advisory mentions that most crime occurs on the New Providence and Grand Bahama islands, and there have been reports of sexual assaults against tourists committed by jet-ski operators. Again the recreational watercrafts which includes boat tours and rentals, are often not well maintained and many companies do not have safety certifications even. The US Bureau of Consular Affairs cautioned the tourist of, “Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assault, is common, even during the day and in tourist areas.”
The case is somewhat similar with the Turks and Caicos Islands – an archipelago, towards the southeast of the Bahamas. The travel advisory issued against the region is due to concerns around crime and limited medical care. As per the Bureau of Consular Affairs of U.S., “Crime at a large scale takes place in Providenciales. Local medical facilities and criminal investigative capabilities are not so very adequate.”
The popular islands, once happens to be the most sought after spots to relish and relax have now turned a little risker. So those seeking sun and sand should be aware, and avoid the areas or services specifically noted by authorities.
