IndiGo, Jet Airways pursue altered strategy to raise revenue and reduce costs

India’s largest airline IndiGo is going to charge for web check-in of all seats in order to compensate their higher costs.

‘‘As per our revised policy, all seats will be chargeable for web check-in. Alternatively, you may check-in at the airport for free. Seats will be assigned as per the availability’’ Indigo airlines reported.

In the meantime, the government  said  it will review IndiGo’s decision to charge more for web check-in.
“We are reviewing these fees to see whether they fall within the unbundled pricing framework,” the aviation ministry said in a statement on Monday morning.

The additional charge, as decided, will be between Rs 100 to Rs 800 relying upon the preferences. The budget aircraft, informed that it has revised its seat policy effective from 14th November 2018.

On the other hand Jet Airways has updated  its Jet-Privilege loyalty programme members who are flying economy class that they will no longer have access to its lounge. As an interim measure, effective December 1, 2018, complimentary lounge access will only be available to  first class and premiere guests,” Jet said.

70 percent of the aviation market of India belongs to three private airlines IndiGo, Jet Airways Ltd and  SpiceJet Ltd., which represent , revealed a joint net loss of more than Rs 2,600 crore—the highest in three years. Rising fuel costs, a weaker rupee and competitive  fares have badly affected the Indian carriers this year.

Before this online booking charge, a few months back  these airlines have already imposed additional charges on  fuel  and  increased overweight stuff expenses to make their higher costs.

IndiGo airlines, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., will presently charge Rs 800 more for the web check-in of a first-row seat, as indicated by its modified charges. A non-reclining  seat in column 12, which is alongside the emergency exit, will cost an extra Rs 600 when chosen on the web. A center seat in the last row will cost Rs 100 more.
