As the whole world continues its battle against the deadly coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the total number of infections rose to 1,780,271 with the epidemic claims lives of 108,822 people from across the globe. So far, the total number of cases in the US has topped the half million mark by the novel coronavirus, and the death toll has surged past 20,000.
According to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:30 pm Saturday (0030 GMT Sunday), the United States recorded 1,920 deaths related to the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours.Though the number of fatalities was lower than the previous day’s record toll of 2,108.
The novel virus has now claimed the lives of at least 20,506 people in the US, the most of any country in the world.The US also leads the world in the number of confirmed infections, with 527,111.
India also witnessing a spike in the growth rate of confirmed Covid-19 cases as the tally is now 8,446 and the death toll reached 288,according to the Worldometer. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a shift in tackling the pandemic from his earlier motto of ‘Jaan hai toh jahaan hai’ to ‘Jaan bhi, jahan bhi’ or from “the world exists if life exists” to “life as well as the world.”
West Bengal became the sixth state in India to announce an extension in the lockdown after Odisha, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana extended the coronavirus-induced lockdown till April 30 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.The nationwide lockdown now looks set to be extended by two more weeks till April-end after a consensus emerged among states for continuing the curbs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his interaction with several chief ministers asked state governments to take steps to curb the lockdown violations and ensure adherence to social distancing, he also announced a shift in focus from ‘Jaan hai to jahaan hai’ (health is wealth) to ‘Jaan bhi, jahaan bhi’ (lives as well as livelihoods), which many saw as indications towards relaxations for certain economic activities, for India’s bright future, and prosperous and healthy India.
