In an unfortunate incident, a hotel used as a coronavirus quarantine center collapsed in southeastern China on Saturday, trapping around 70 people, state media reported. There were no immediate reports of cause of the collapse or any fatality.
At least 47 of the 70 were rescued from the rubble of the five-storey Xinjia Express Hotel by Sunday, state media and other outlets reported. Still dozens trapped under the debris.
The 80-room hotel rated as 4.5 star on Trip.com opened in June 2018 and had been converted by the city government for observation of people who had contact with virus patients.As reported,the hotel collapsed at about 7:30 p.m on Saturday evening.
Search and rescue efforts continued Sunday as emergency workers combing through the building’s wreckage. On Sunday morning local time, rescue team pulled out another man from beneath the rubble. He was the 48th survivor to be rescued till now.
At least 848 fire fighters, 169 fire engines and seven search dogs were deployed in the rescue mission, the Fujian Fire Department confirmed.
Xinjia Hotel situated in Quanzhou is a city of 8 million, lies in Fujian province on the mainland side of the Taiwan Strait. The city is around 620 miles from Wuhan, where the global COVID-19 outbreak began.
