Death toll has climbed to 43 due to flooding and other rain-triggered incidents and another 24 are still missing in Nepal. Six districts in Bihar too are staring at floods as heavy rainfall batters border areas between India and Nepal.
Briefing media, the Nepal Police said, “43 people dead, 24 missing and 20 injured due to flooding and landslide in the country, following incessant rainfall”. Deaths were reported from various districts, including Lalitpur, Kavre, Kotang, Bhojpur and Makanpur.
Heavy monsoon rains for the past few days have left many settlements at high risk of floods and landslides in several places in Nepal, including the capital city Kathmandu. Transportation has also been disrupted in all major highways.
Continual rainfall in the past few days has resulted in water level in rivers in Nepal and Bihar swelling.The situation is not likely to improve as weather department predicts for moderate to heavy rainfall for most of Sunday as well. Rainfall has also reportedly hampered rescue operations but local authorities are continuing with their plans of bringing people to safer locations.
Indian authorities too in Bihar are at their best to take people to safer places as at least six districts here face threat from floods. Water level in Koshi, Gandak, Budhi Gandak, Ganga and Bagmati rivers are on the rise. This has already resulted in many locals in Supaul, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Araria and Kishanganj districts to flee. NDRF have already been deployed to assist with rescue and relief operations.
Heavy rain has been pouring in Bihar for the past five days and has caused a flood-like situation in many areas. Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has directed the administration to keep a strong vigil on the water level of the concerned rivers and the dams in the state.
