There has been a restriction enforced on the sale and serving of alcohol beyond 11 p.m., in the Western Indian state of Goa.The state tourism office appealed the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday, for relaxation in the time limit of the rule.
Recently, the state is expecting a surge in domestic tourists with the approaching summer vacations. The restriction may hamper the interest of holidaymakers during this time. Further the poll-related restrictions at such a time may affect Goa’s image as a nightlife destination.
The state’s hoteliers, and bar & restaurant owners are quite worried that the 11 p.m. deadline is being imposed even on eateries which are licenced to serve alcohol till later hours. They have already made two separate representations to the Tourism Minister complaining about it.
A statement issued by the Tourism Ministry said, “As the tourism season is currently at its peak and is expecting a further surge for the weekend festivities, much stress has been put on the need for a relaxation in timings, by the Tourism Department.”
Further, the Tourism Department stated that the Chief Electoral Officer made out the issues and has assured to take up the matter with the ECI.
As per the stastics last year Goa witnessed 48,79,359 domestic tourists’ and 60,4,414 foreign tourists’ foot falls and the state is also heading for polls on 23rd of this month.
