A plane bound for Dubai has made an emergency landing in Chittagong, Bangladesh after a hijacking attempt, the airline operator has confirmed.The gunman who tried to hijack the Dubai-bound flight flying from Dhaka via Chittagong died after commandoes stormed the plane at Chittagong airport, according to senior Bangladeshi officials.The attacker identified as Mahadi, around 25 years-old, is considered to be “mentally derailed.”
“The hijacker was arrested and taken for interrogation. He had sustained serious injuries and died, ” the official said. However, he did not reveal the exact cause of death.
“All the passengers and the crew are safe. The hijack attempt was successfully foiled by our security personnel,” he added.
The same was confirmed by Maj General Motiur Rahman, general commanding officer of Chattogram at a press briefing at Dhaka this evening.
‘We did not have the chance to negotiate. Our commandoes had to act swiftly. He was initially injured and later died,” he told the media.
The attacker reportedly demanded that he wants to speak to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, according to security officials.
“He took an attacking position. There was no other way out,” said the commanding officer adding that the Bangladeshi Navy tried to negotiate with him.
Flight BG147 was scheduled to fly from Chittagong to Dubai with 150 passengers aboard.
