1 dead and at least nine people have been trapped under snow after an Avalanche hits SUV in Khardung La, Ladakh on Friday, 18 January. Search Operations are underway for the rescue.( More reports are awaiting )
Khardung La is one of the highest motorable roads in the region located north of Leh connecting the Shyok and Nubra valleys.
Army and police have been rushed to the sight and launched a joint search operation to rescue the trapped people. It is learnt that four vehicles are also trapped under snow.
On a day before , a fresh avalanche warning was issued for avalanche-prone areas of nine districts of the Kashmir division. The warning has been issued for the Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh districts.People are advised to stay away from avalanche-prone areas.
As per the MeT officials report, several parts of Kashmir valley witnessed heavy snowfall on Thursday with Srinagar receiving 5.4 mm of snow, Gulmarg in north Kashmir witnessing 15.2 mm snowfall. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 9.0 mm snow and Kupwara received 16.2 mm of snow.It is also predicted that Kashmir valley is excepted to witness heavy snowfall and will remain active between January 19 to January 23.
