The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee called for the games to be postponed a year for safety precautions amid global coronavirus pandemic.
The Olympic Committee of the country announced on Sunday that Team Canada will not participate in 2020 Summer Olympics due to the concerns about outbreak of coronavirus.
By declaring this,Canada becomes the first country to withdraw its athletes from Olympic as they are currently scheduled.
The IOC said on Sunday it would consider even moving the Games by a year or more and make its decision within four weeks, though a full-on cancellation was not being considered.
The COC and CPC instead called for the Olympics to be postponed one year to the summer of 2021, so that it would send its athletes to participate.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also urged the IOC to make a fast decision, adding that a postponement would be foreseeable if the games cannot be held in a complete way.
In the meantime, the Australian Olympic Committee is advising its athletes to get ready for an Olympics in 2021.
