India has confirmed the second death due to coronavirus,which was killed more than 5000 people in over 100 countries.
A 68-year-old woman, tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday has died of coronavirus in Delhi, the health ministry and Delhi government officials confirmed on Friday.This became the second death linked to the global pandemic in India.
Her death comes at a time when the number of cases in India rose to 85, including a 76-year-old man who died earlier on Thursday in Karnataka.
As reported, the woman was the sixth case of coronavirus from the capital and had other conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes.She was a resident of West Delhi and had come in contact with her son who had contracted the virus after visited Switzerland and Italy last month.
While initially her son had not shown any symptoms of infection, he reported to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on 7th of March with a fever and cough.
As per the statement by the government, the family was screened as per protocol and since son and the mother had the symptoms of COVID-19, both were admitted.
On March 9, the condition of the woman worsened with the development of pneumonia and shifted to the intensive care unit or ICU. She tested positive for coronavirus on the same day. Due to comorbid conditions, she died on 13th March.
Briefing at a news conference,Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health Lav Aggarwal said around 4,000 people who had come in contact with the infected people have been identified and were being tracked while around 42,000 people in the country are under community surveillance.
Meanwhile, The WHO said that Europe was now the epicentre for the global coronavirus pandemic that killed more than 5,000 people, with cases around the world topping 1.34 lakh.
