Luxembourg ,the richest country in Europe no becomes the first country in the world to make public transport free. In fact this free transport offer is available to both residents as well as tourists.
This move, much to the surprise of all as declared by the government, has been considered as a measure to reduce dense car traffic where car is the king of the roads. As reported this move will also affect approximately 40 per cent of households, and help them save around 100 Euros annually.
This facility will be available in all trams, trains and buses and—unlike Estonia’s capital—will be available to both tourists as well as residents.
As said by Luxembourg’s minister for mobility, François Bausch , the introduction of free public transport is an important social measure. The idea behind this move was also to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor as well as reduce congestion.
A survey revealed that the most used form of transport in the country is private cars and cars accounted for 71 per cent of leisure and 47 per cent of business travel.
