The district administration of East Sikkim on Friday issued directions to the authorities concerned not to issue permits for tourists planning to go to Nathu La on January 4 and 5, 2020.
After the information received from the Indian Meteorological Department about the inclement weather conditions of the region, East Sikkim district collector has directed the concerned authorities to follow the instructions immediately in a bid to avoid any untoward incidents.
Nathu La pass, a popular tourist destination and turned out to be a winter paradise is situated at an altitude of 14,140 ft above mean sea level. This region has been marked by persistent snowfall this season.
With temperature dropping to -2 degrees Celsius, the Tsomgo (Changu) Lake in East Sikkim that falls on the Gangtok-Nathula highway got frozen on Friday with the area around it fully covered in snow.
Nearly a week back,on 27th December 27 last year, the army had to rescue around 1700 tourists who were stuck near the lake and Nathu-la following heavy snowfall.
