IRCTC Vikalp scheme: How it is beneficial for Railway passengers

IRCTC has inducted the option of Vikalp for the ease of Indian Railways passengers. IRCTC Vikalp option has been mostly incorporated to assure a seat on the route selected by the passengers in either of the trains.

IRCTC says opting for VIKALP does not essentially mean that a confirmed berth will be provided to passengers in an alternate train as it is subject to train and berth availability.

Passengers opting for IRCTC Vikalp can be transferred to an alternate train opted and departing between 30 minutes to 72 hours from the scheduled departure of the original train following which boarding and terminating station might change to nearby cluster stations.Passengers are also allowed to pick the Vikalp option after booking train tickets through the ticket booking history link prior to the preparation of reservation charts.

The IRCTC Vikalp option can be a good option for all the passengers who are flexible of the journey date and other related trains plying on the desired route.IRCTC levies cancellation charges according to the berth/train status in the alternate train once a seat/berth is confirmed. 

Passengers are  not allowed to modify the journey once they have been allotted an alternate accommodation via the IRCTC Vikalp facility. Passengers can only cancel the ticket and have to book a fresh ticket as per their requirement in a conventional manner if they are not suitable in travelling on the Vikalp-allotted seat/berth/train.
