The United Nations World Tourism Organisation celebrated World Tourism Day every year on 27th September.This day was chosen as World Tourism Day because it coincided with the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970.This year India is the host country for World Tourism Day 2019 and this years event will be held in New Delhi, which has an array of historical sites including the World Heritage Sites, centuries-old monuments that are a part of the city’s daily life, diverse cultures, sprawling greenery, rich architecture and a famed cuisine and even language.
The theme of the World Tourism Day 2019 will be ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’. Tourism is a foremost source of employment because of its labour-intensive nature and the significant multiplier effect on employment in related sectors. It is estimated that one job in the core tourism sector creates about one-and-a-half additional or indirect jobs in the tourism-related economy. Overall tourism accounts for one in ten jobs worldwide.
Tourism industry employs more women and young people than most other sectors. Just under half (47%) of people working in tourism in European OECD countries are between 15 and 34 years of age, compared to a third (32%) of workers in the economy as a whole. In OECD countries, women account for 60% of employment in the tourism sector. This is higher than the share of women employed in the services sector (47%) and in the economy as a whole (43%).
India is hosting World Tourism Day for the first time. Events for the celebration is scheduled at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi from 26-28, September 2019.
On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik welcomed everyone to travel around the state and celebrate its delectable diversity.Taking to his Twitter handle, Patnaik said “ It’s our constant endeavor to unlock the immense potential of #Odisha, endowed with natural beauty, rich heritage, captivating landscapes, diverse flora & fauna. On #WorldTourismDay, let’s travel around Odisha & celebrate its delectable diversity.’’
Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India, urged the youth to visit tourist destinations in the country on World Tourism Day. “On #WorldTourismDay2019 I call upon the youth to visit tourist destinations in the country to understand the rich cultural heritage of India. Travelling teaches many things. It introduces us to the diverse cultures of the world,” the Vice President tweeted.
Biplab Kumar Deb, the Chief Minister of Tripura, invited everyone to his state – “the hidden gem of northeast”.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also invited people to visit his state and join in the 550th Prakash Purb celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He also shared a beautiful clip from the state.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also promoted tourism by sharing beautiful pictures from the state.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Today is #WorldTourismDay. I welcome you all to come and #ExperienceBengal.
“As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let us recognize the transformative power of tourism. Together, we can realize tourism’s potential to build a better, more equal future” as messaged by the Secretary-General, UNWTO Zurab Pololikashvili.
Prahlad Singh Patel, Minister of State (IC) for Tourism & Culture, Government of India on his message said “On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, I would like to express my gratitude to UNWTO for choosing India as the host for this year’s World Tourism Day.
