Typhoon Faxai hits Tokyo: kills at least two, 40 injured, a blackout left hundreds of thousands without power

Typhoon Faxai (a woman’s name in the Lao language), the season’s 15th of its kind and one of the strongest typhoons in recent years swept through Tokyo on Sunday night and Monday morning , leaving at least three people dead, injuring dozens more and nearly 1 million people have been left stranded and without power as the electrical infrastructure was hit hard in the region. The death toll likely to go up as officials survey the damage. As reported,those two people died in accidents apparently caused by the strong gusts — one belong to Tokyo and other from Kanagawa.

A woman in her 50s in Tokyo has been confirmed dead after CCTV captured her being blown into a wall by a strong gust of wind.

As reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency, record-breaking winds of up to 207kph were registered at Haneda airport. Faxai forced more than 130 flights to be cancelled on Sunday evening and into the early hours of Monday morning.Large queues were also reported at Tokyo’s Narita airport.

As the typhoon hit, the East Japan Railway Co. suspended all lines in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area early Monday, which has a population of 36 million. Public transport infrastructure was brought to a standstill and train lines closed for hours for safety checks to ensure no debris remained on the tracks.

The typhoon also hit the Japan’s largest floating solar plant as it has caught fire. At least 50 panels have caught fire, though no injuries have been reported. Firefighters are struggling to control the blaze at the Yamakura Dam in Chiba Prefecture on Monday afternoon.

According to The Tokyo Electric Power Co. initially above 850,000 customers were  left without power after typhoon hit,but by Monday night local time, that number had dropped to about 700,000.

The train services also slowly resumed midmorning, but all the lines are experiencing serious delays.
