Chennai witnessed heavy rainfall on Sunday evening which came as a pleasant relief for a parched city. At a time when the city is faced with a crippling water crisis, the convective rains came accompanied by thunder and lightning in many parts of the city.
As per a report, the city received around one cm of rain in the core areas owing to the fact that the spell was brief and intense at the same time. Rains lashed Nungambakkam, T Nagar, Guindy, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Adyar as well as parts of North Chennai.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, the rains may well continue over the next two days. “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas during evening or night. Maximum and Minimum temperatures are likely to be around 37 and 26 deg Celsius respectively.” a statement from the Meteorology Department said on Sunday night, predicting the weather for the city over the next 48 hours.
Pradeep John,a city-based weather blogger who runs a Facebook page ‘Tamil Nadu Weatherman’ noted that this was the spell for the Kancheepuram-Thiruvallur-Chennai region so far this year. “Not an inch will be left without rains in city. North chennai will gets its share too. After this spell comes to end in 20 to 30 mins it will be a long drizzling night from stratiform,” he wrote.
As reported in The New Indian Express, the city is currently reeling under 44% deficit rainfall. While the city is normally supposed to have received 117.2 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 15, it has only received 65.5 mm of rainfall. On Friday, the first train carrying water from Jolarpet in Vellore district finally arrived in Chennai.
