A four-storey building collapsed in south Mumbai’s Dongri area on Tuesday, a civic official said, fearing that about 40 to 50 people are trapped under the debris.
According to initial report, the ground-plus-four-storey ‘Kesarbai’ building, located on Tandel Street in Dongri, crashed around 11.40 am, the official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell said.
Fire brigade, Mumbai Police and civic officials rushed to the site to carry out the rescue operation.Three large teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are reached the site to help the rescue work. The area, full of dilapidated buildings on narrow lanes, was also flooded in heavy rain in the past weeks.
Ambulances and fire trucks have arrived and are parked some distance away from the building as the lanes are too narrow for them to enter.
“This building must be 90-100 years old. I saw the bodies of some children. There were some seven-eight families in the building,” another eyewitness said to media.
.Local residents there also have formed a human chain to help the rescue teams in removing debris as it difficult for big machines to reach the spot.
1.25pm:The BMC reported that 2 people have been confirmed dead and 5 have been rescued so far.
