A 31 old year man has been arrested for allegedly raping and robbing a British woman tourist in the west-Indian state of Goa. The mishap took place on Thursday, early in the morning around 4 am in Canacona town when the woman was in her way to her hotel room from the railway station. The tourist is 48 years old.
The accused has been identified from the south-Indian state of Tamil Nadu. After committing the crime, the man even managed to fled away with the victim’s luggage too.
The woman is a regular visitor to Goa since ten years,as said by the Police. Under Indian law, victims of sexual assault cannot be identified in the media.
On that very day, she had gone to catch a train from Canacona town to Thivim station located in North Goa region. Since the train got delayed, she decided to return to her hotel room, near the Palolem beach. Finding her alone, the accused man pushed her to a paddy field on the roadside and hit her in the eyes, due to which her vision blurred for a few minutes, and then raped her, as reported by the police.
With the help of CCTV footage from the railway station and the area where the crime took place, police were able to track down the suspect.
Goa is one of India’s most coveted tourist destinations and its beaches attract thousands of foreigners every year. Such type of cases among others have been filed in regular intervals which put tourism sector as well as the country’s reputation at stake.
In 2017, an Irish woman, Danielle McLaughlin, was raped and murdered while on holiday in Goa. In 2008, Scarlett Keeling, a 15-year-old British teenager had to face the same as well and the list has many others. Although public outrage over sexual violence in India rose greatly, at times, such cases are surfacing all over the country which need Government’s serious intervention.
