In an unfortunate incident here in Chennai’s Marina beach on sunday, three engineering students drowned on Sunday and are feared dead by police. The students were on the purpose of outing to the shoreline.
The mishap took place, when eight students of Sri Venkateswara College in Sriperumbudur visited Marina beach on Sunday. Three students out of the eight, went to the beach to play and five others decided to remain on the shore.When they realised that their friends gone missing then they started searching and alerted the police. All of them were hostellers as reported by the police.
The local fishermen also started a search immediately for the missing students. One student named Dinesh’s body was washed onto land later on Sunday, while the other two are still missing.
Being the second longest urban beach in the world, Marina Beach is one of the desired destinations for the tourists in chennai. The white sands of the beach stretch far into the skyline, makes it a standout amongst the most dazzling shorelines on the Indian coast.
The beach is in the bank of the Indian Ocean and bay of Bengal. Essentially being an urban beach and tourist hot spot, this place welcomes around thirty thousand tourists and locals every day.
In order to avoid any untoward incidence on the beach, the city police have installed warning boards and intensified patrolling along the stretch. Here in this incident, officials from the Coastal Security Group reported the stretch close to the Adyar estuary – the place where Adyar river joins the Bay of Bengal – was not appropriate for swimming since the water is deep and the tidal waves are strong.
However, inorder to protect and safeguard the visitors of Marina Beach, the tourism department has taken several precautionary measures. But these are not the only steps to be enough, instead the visitors should also be careful and well aware of the warnings given by the administration. Otherwise to evade such heart breaking incidents will be very difficult.
