According to a recent report entitled ‘Aircraft leasing in India: Opportunity knocks for an Indian lessor’ published by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) about 81 per cent of commercial aircraft in India are leased compared to global ratio of 53 per cent.
The eye-popping statistics of leading airlines do lease at least some of their aircrafts. Most airlines who opt to buy one, end up with not paying the full price tag.
India’s aviation indusrty also depends heavily on such leased aircrafts, as it has 652 commercial aircrafts with operators including 34 in storage, out of which 531 aircrafts are leased which is 81 percent of the total, as stated in the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) Fleet Database. This compares with a leased aircraft share of 52% in Asia overall and 53% globally. Indian airlines’ leasing dependency reflects their relative youth and/or financial vulnerability.
