Activists protest against the illegal trafficking of baby elephants to China and Dubai

According to an investigator as reported to an international body that polices trade in wildlife, secretive agents in Laos are sending dozens of animals in country’s land border with China and the Middle East every year. As stated by film-maker Karl Ammann this makes a profit up to $230,000 each.

The racket involves elephants being sold to circuses, zoos etc who are then abused painfully behind the scenes. In two years China has apparantly imported as many as 80 live Asian elephants and 100 baby African elephants. Though the import from Zimbabwe is legal, the act has reduced elephant population which was already dwindling due to human practices.
