Located near the town Migori, in western Kenya the remains of a sixteenth century settlement became Kenya’s latest UNESCO World Heritage Site. The prime point of interest are the stone walls which are built without the use of any kind of mortar.A similarity can be drawn between it and the ruins of The Great Zimbabwe only difference being the finesse which served a protective circle for livestock, food stores and people.Thimlich Ohinga is one of several example preserved till today. With this recognition the western Kenya region is expected to witness a substantial growth in tourism.
Meanwhile in The Lake Turkana World Heritage Site, Thimlich Ohinga has been declared in danger probably due to the Giba dam projects in Ethiopia which has drastically reduced the inflow of water, the water levels and increased the salinity of water.
